Driving in Cyprus & Important Rental Information

Please read this before you collect your vehicle. Cyprus drives on the left, and a few simple habits make the whole trip easier and safer.

Driving in Cyprus

Traffic drives on the LEFT. Take a moment before your first turn and remember: the driver sits closest to the centre line.
At junctions and roundabouts, traffic goes clockwise and you give way to vehicles already on the roundabout, coming from your right.
Seat belts are compulsory for the driver and all passengers, front and back.
Using a hand-held phone while driving is prohibited. Set up navigation before you start moving.
Follow the posted speed limits and road signs; distances and limits are in kilometres.
Park only where parking is permitted. Avoid double yellow lines, bus stops and pavements.
Alcohol limits are strictly enforced. If you plan to drink, do not drive.

Only drivers named on the rental agreement may drive the vehicle.
An additional driver must be registered in advance and present the required driving licence details.
Return the vehicle with the fuel level agreed at handover.
Check the vehicle together with the provider at handover and again at return, and mention anything you notice.
Please return the car reasonably clean, and remove your rubbish.
Smoking is not allowed in the vehicle.
If a dashboard warning light appears or something feels wrong, stop safely and contact the rental provider before continuing.

Stop somewhere safe, switch on hazard lights and make sure everyone is safe first.
Contact the rental provider immediately — they will tell you exactly what to do.
Follow the instructions of the provider and the police, and wait for the agreed next step.
Do not arrange repairs, towing or private settlements on your own; improvised action can invalidate the insurance.

Do not keep driving on a flat or damaged tyre — it can cause further damage and is unsafe.
Stop in a safe place and call the rental provider for the correct procedure.
Report any new damage as soon as you notice it, with photos where possible.

Ordinary rental cars are intended for permitted, surfaced roads.
Off-road, unsurfaced or restricted routes may be prohibited and uninsured under the rental terms.
If you want to explore rougher terrain, ask us first — a suitable vehicle type may be available.
The rental conditions of your booking are the source of truth for permitted use.

Say "stay left" out loud for your first few junctions; it works surprisingly well.
Let a passenger help with directions so you can keep your eyes on the road.
Take the first roundabout slowly — there is no prize for speed.
Mountain roads are narrow and winding; allow more time than the map suggests.
Fuel stations can be self-service in the evening; keep a card handy.
Village streets are tight — fold the mirrors in if you park on a narrow lane.
